My experience:
Grey water, septic and bio-cycle system safe, this is one of the most popular Tri Nature products and one that people recognise the most. It smells fantastic! The smell is Spearmint & Musk, which sounds weird but is actually sooo good. Sphagnum Moss Disinfectant kills odours and germs on surfaces and in the air on contact.

Uses:
A lot of people think they have no use for a disinfectant but here are just some of the ways you can use Sphag Moss:
- as a room deodoriser
- cleaning and disinfecting the toilet seat
- cleaning and disinfecting the toilet floor, if you have kids or a house full of boys with bad aim
- smelly shoes
- mattresses after wee accidents
- to kill mould and inhibit regrowth
- cleaning pet urine areas (contains no ammonia so won’t encourage them to urinate in the same area again)
- cleaning, deodorising and disinfecting the floor (I put a capful into the bucket when mopping)
- cleaning and disinfecting change table
- cleaning, disinfecting and deodorising nappy bins and garbage bins
- deodorising caravan toilets
Sphagnum Moss is designed to kill germs but it does have some cleaning properties. If you are just doing a general maintenance clean, Sphag Moss is great to use anywhere you like and I have many customers who use it all over the house. If you have more heavy duty cleaning to do, I recommend Supre Multipurpose Cleaner.
Another handy tip is that I always keep a 50ml spray bottle of this in my handbag. I use it in public toilets and in hotel showers and bathrooms when I travel. Some exciting varieties of foot germs are highly contagious.
Sizes available:
The 500ml bottle is a premixed, ready to use version that is great if you just want to try or if you don’t use a disinfectant very often.
The 1L and 5L concentrates works out to about $0.65 per 500ml bottle when diluted down at commercial strength. This is a BIG saving when compared with the $4 to $5 you would spend on the equivalent product from elsewhere.
If you purchase the concentrate, you will need a 500ml polyspray bottle to dilute it into. I highly recommend the Tri Nature polysprays as they are made from a commercial grade plastic and last about 25 years.
Don’t forget to put a label on your polyspray bottle so you know what’s in it!
Note that the Express 500ml bottles are not refillable. They are designed to be single use packaging that breaks down quickly on disposal. I do not recommend re-using the Express bottles for diluting the concentrate as they will leak, however, I have had customers report back to me that they have been reusing the express bottles for up to 2 years without an issue.
Directions for Use:
- For Commercial Grade Disinfection, dilute 25 ml product into 500 ml spray bottle and fill with water. Spray directly over surface. Wipe off any excess with a clean dry cloth or leave it to dry naturally.
- For Commercial Grade Mopping, dilute 50 ml product per 1Lt of water. Mop over area and allow to dry.
- For Home Disinfection, where heavy duty disinfection is not required, the product can be diluted 5 to 10 ml into 500 ml spray bottle.
- For Home Mopping, dilute 10 to 20 ml product per 1Lt of water.

Why is it called Sphagnum Moss?
The original Sphagnum Moss we all know and love had an active ingredient in it called….Sphagnum Moss! Sphagnum Moss is a powerful disinfectant and made a wonderful key ingredient.
Tri Nature have a very strict policy around where they source their ingredients. There are a number of boxes that must be ticked including that the ingredients must come from sustainable plantations and ethical suppliers (people who treat their workers fairly, are not causing destruction to the environment, etc.).
There has only been one supplier of Sphagnum Moss who met this criteria. Unfortunately, in recent times, this changed. Tri Nature decided that they would rethink the product rather than compromise on their criteria.
It turns out that Sphagnum Moss was so awesome at its job of disinfecting that it had to be replaced with not one, but THREE ingredients. The combination of Oregano, Rosemary and Thyme have replaced Sphag Moss as the active ingredient.
Oregano, Rosemary and Thyme extracts are well known for their potent antimicrobial benefits and have been combined synergistically to boost antimicrobial performance.
Oregano, although a widely recognized herb used in Mediterranean cuisine, and was traditionally used as an antiseptic.
Thyme has been used in traditional medicine to treat both infection and inflammation.
Rosemary herbal extracts are known for providing antioxidant protection.
So Sphagnum Moss, no longer actually contains Sphagnum Moss, but it’s the same great smell and does the same great job!
